A man who died after an apparent fight early Thursday morning in Newton has been identified as 22-year-old Mandeepak "Deepak" Chahal.

Police were called to the scene near 131 Street and 65B Avenue shortly before 2 a.m. June 19 after callers to 911 had reported there was a group of men arguing outside.

One man, now identified as Chahal, was rushed to hospital but died from his injuries.

The cause of death was not released, but police say Chahal was not known to them and the incident was not gang or drug related.

"We are still in the process of confirming a motive for this incident and the investigation continues," said IHIT (Integrated Homicide Investigation Team) spokesman Sgt. Bari Emam.

Nearby St. Bernadette Elementary, a private school, was closed Thursday.

A woman told CTV there have been past problems with noise and drugs in the neighbourhood. Another person said fights are not uncommon in the area and that he heard screaming and fighting before police arrived early Thursday.

Chahal's death came only hours after a man in the Clayton area of Surrey was shot in the hand. He was reportedly driving a van when he was hit by gunfire Wednesday afternoon (June 18).

Anyone with information about the homicide is asked to call the IHIT tip line at 1-877-551-4448 or to remain anonymous, Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477 or solvecrime.ca
