Alvin Roy Myhre

February 24, 2018

Apr 8, 1930 - Feb 24, 2018
On February 24, 2018, at 87 years of age, Alvin Roy Myhre, with family at his side, passed away peacefully to be with the Lord.

On April 8, 1930 in Maidstone, Saskatchewan, Alvin Roy was born to Lillian (Leslie) Myhre and Olaf Myhre. Alvin had 5 siblings, with his loving sister Marjorie remaining with us today. On July 7, 1956, Alvin exchanged marriage vows with Donna May Eloise (Gougeon) Myhre, and they went on to have three children: Bryan Myhre (Sandra), Carol Myhre and Heather Myhre, 5 grandchildren and 6 great grandchildren.

Following his Masters Degree with distinction in Educational Leadership, Alvin served as superintendent of schools in Alberta, British Columbia and the Yukon; further, he was elected as President of the Canadian Association of School Administrators, served as a director of the Canadian Education Association and was a dynamic speaker at annual conventions and university lectures. Prior to his 1985 retirement, Alvin was recognized for his professional contribution to education by four different provincial and national educational associations in "Recognition of Outstanding Service to the Association and to Education in Canada". Alvin was also presented the Governor General of Canada medal for service to his profession.

Throughout the years Alvin also served his church and the community in various leadership roles. He was a proud member of the Metis Nation of British Columbia and served as the Metis Elder representative for the Metis Nation of BC on the Surrey School District Aboriginal Education Council. Alvin held the title as Captain of the Hunt with the BC Metis Assembly of Natural Resources for the Lower Mainland.

Dad was married to the love of his life for 61 years and would have celebrated his 62 anniversary on July 7, 2018. Alvin was a deeply compassionate, respectful, courageous, and resourceful Christian man with a wonderful sense of humour, which he maintained throughout his lifetime and during his last few days with his loving family and many lifelong friends. Alvin was an engaging and delightful teller of stories to his children and grandchildren; he was an avid curler, golfer, dancer and billiards player. He enjoyed hunting, fishing and spending time in the wilderness.

Alvin's stories will always live in the hearts of those that had the honour to have known him. His final words were "I am very happy and feel at peace".

We welcome all to the celebration of life on Saturday, March 17, 2:00 pm, at St. Mark's (Ocean Park) Anglican Church, 12953 20th Avenue, Surrey, BC. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Indspire, a national indigenous-led registered charity that invests in the education of Indigenous people for the long term benefit of these individuals, their families and communities, and Canada.
