On August 23rd, our beloved brother, friend and uncle was taken away from us after a lengthy illness.
Predeceased by his father, Capt. J.C.C.W. van Nooten, his stepfather and mother J.M. and Helena (de Rave) van Baarsel.
During his long and eventful life, Marius survived many illnesses, hazards and threats in Japanese concentration camps which would have crushed a weaker man.
He survived. He fulfilled his childhood dream of becoming a sailor and traveled the oceans, ending up as captain of a ship in the B.C.waters.
He was loved and admired for his capabilities, good nature, generosity and consideration for his friends and relatives. Missed and never
to be forgotten by Bart and John & Moira van Nooten, Rinske & Don Dugger-van Nooten, his nieces and nephews, Daniel as well as his many friends at BC ALPHA (Association for Learning & Preserving the History ofWWII in Asia). He was an active founding-member of the August 15th, 1945, Foundation which commemorated the end of the war in South-East Asia. In this, as in other things, he continued his search for justice for those who suffered unjustly.
A commemoration service will be held on September 7 (Saturday) at 2:30 pm at Turnbull Gallery, South Surrey Recreation and Arts Centre, 14601, 20 Ave, Surrey, BC V4A 9P5
