November 5, 1928 - August 9, 2019
Edythe was born on November 5, 1928 in Imperial Saskatchewan and passed away peacefully at Westminster House Residence on August 9, 2019. She was the loving wife of Mel for 69 years and beloved mother of Linda, Carolyn (Jim), James (Michaela) and John (Karen). She was a cherished Gramma to 7 and Great Gramma to 4. She will be dearly missed by her sisters Avis and Gladys (Walt) of Calgary and numerous nieces and nephews. Edythe was predeceased by her parents, Henry and Winfred Fichtner and her brother Herb.
Edythe was most of all a kind woman. She was so often described as thoughtful and gracious. An excellent student and avid reader, she was usually at the top of her class. She graduated from St Paul's School of Nursing in Saskatoon in 1950. She was dedicated to her family and involved in her church and wider community wherever she lived. Edythe and Mel raised their children in Rosetown and Swift Current, Saskatchewan. She was a devoted stay-at-home Mom, supporting children and all their activities with the gift of time. Countless mornings she drove to figure skating practices or swim meets. Edythe returned to her nursing career once all four children were in school and was a sought after RN in the ICU in Swift Current. Throughout her life, Edythe was an active member of the United Church Women (UCW).
Following Mel's retirement in the early 80s, they moved to Indonesia. While Mel was building roads, Edythe taught English to medical students. Upon returning to Canada, they moved to Calgary where both became realtors. Mel and Edythe moved to White Rock in 1990. Both enjoyed two decades of extensive world travel.
Edythe enjoyed playing the piano, reading, gardening, and early morning aquasize. She was an accomplished hostess, welcoming family and friends for wonderful food and fellowship. She loved to walk on the Promenade. In her later years, she was active in the Parkinson's Society.
Edythe gave her family an example of how to be a strong and caring person. Her gentle spirit will be an inspiration as the family continues to love and care for one another.
A Celebration of Life will be held on September 14 at 2pm at the Crescent Site of Peninsula United Church (2756 - 127 St Surrey). Donations in Edythe's honor may be directed to the Parkinson's Society of BC or the Peninsula United Memorial Fund.
