January 28, 1945 - August 1, 2018
Alan passed away peacefully at Irene Thomas Hospice Residence on August 1, 2018. He was the loving husband of Joan for 47 years, devoted father of Drew (Ashley) and Katie (Chris), and adoring grandpa of Jayden and Kennedy. Alan was predeceased by his parents, Jack and Helen Pretty. Alan will be deeply missed by his sister, Elizabeth Cook, and many family members, friends and colleagues.

Alan was an avid life-long learner. He had many interests including extensive travelling, kayaking, scuba diving, skiing, sailing, computer science, painting, wood-working and advancing his Spanish skills, yet his main passion has always been in medicine. Alan graduated from UBC Medical School in 1970 and furthered his education in Internal Medicine at VGH and Chest Medicine in Edinburgh, Scotland.

Joan and Alan settled in White Rock in 1973 where Alan joined Hilltop Medical Clinic. Alan was Chief of Medical Staff for 15 years at Peace Arch Hospital. He also worked at the Hay River Regional Health Centre in the Northwest Territories and volunteered in several underprivileged countries. Alan thoroughly enjoyed teaching and working with medical students and nurses.

Alan will be lovingly remembered for enriching our lives with his intelligence, quick wit, dedication to medicine, kindness and zest for life.

Alan's family wishes to thank the doctors and nurses who assisted Alan during this past year and the staff and volunteers at Irene Thomas Hospice Residence for the excellent care they provided to him.

In lieu of flowers, donations in Alan's memory to the Peace Arch Hospital Foundation would be appreciated.

A Celebration of Life will be announced at a later date.
