It is with deep sadness that we announce that Katherine Elizabeth Hughes, beloved wife, mother, sister, aunt, cousin and dear friend, passed away the morning of April 6th at Peace Arch Hospital. She was 72 years old.
Katie is survived by her husband Richard, sons Ben and Tom, and siblings and extended family of the Depenciers.
Katie was born in London, England and moved to Canada with her family, first to the Kerrisdale neighbourhood in Vancouver and then to Edmonton, Alberta.
She developed a passion for the performing arts and would eventually settle in White Rock, where she made lifelong friends in the community. She spent her years performing for the White Rock Players Club, finding adventure in places like New Zealand and Australia.
She soon discovered her calling in horticultural and recreational therapy, being in the first graduating class of the Douglas College recreational therapy program and used her talents during a long working career at Riverview Hospital, Langley Lodge, White Rock Seniors Village and Peace Arch Hospital, where she happily ended her career taking care of residents at the Weatherby 1 Pavilion.
Katie had an endless list of passions that drove her to finding and sharing tremendous joy in her life. Katie was a peerless gardener, lover of animals, and believer in people.
She spent her later years finding new interests and things to keep her mind sharp and her heart open. She found great fun in crossword puzzles, mystery novels, jigsaw puzzles, and the joys of cooking with her sons.
Despite her illness at the time of passing, she never lost her wit, her love for her family and friends, and her smile.
She passed away gently, surrounded by her husband and sons.
