October 10, 1927 - May 9, 2022
It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our mother, Margaret MacGregor Whyte (nee Duffin), at the age of 94. Mom entered peacefully into the arms of the Lord on May 9, 2022 with 3 of her children by her side.
Born on October 10, 1927 in Hamilton, Lanarkshire, Scotland, Margaret was the youngest of 4 children. Her family moved to Calgary, Alberta when Mom was 2 years old. During her teenage years Mom attended Sacred Heart School where she forged many life-long friendships.
Shortly after graduating high school she met the love of her life, Allan Reid Whyte. Mom and Dad were married July 3, 1948. In the summer of 2020 they celebrated 72 years of marriage.
In support of Dad's 42-year career with Honeywell, and as their family grew to 8 children, Mom and Dad moved from Calgary to Edmonton to Regina to Vancouver then ultimately to Toronto. When Dad retired in 1988, they returned to the West Coast where they built their retirement home in Surrey, BC.
When Mom was not busy raising her children, she somehow found time to be actively involved in church choirs, the CWL (Catholic Women's League), spaghetti dinners, church bazaars, school fundraisers and curling, while at the same time, knitting, crocheting and sewing clothes, Halloween costumes and working for Elections Canada.
Mom and Dad loved to socialize with their many friends. Their annual New Years' party was a tradition that lasted for decades.
In her downtime, Mom loved watching sports: baseball, curling, figure skating, tennis, golf - she loved it all! When there wasn't a sporting event on TV, she loved old movies and, of course without fail, Wheel of Fortune and Jeopardy.
Mom and Dad enjoyed traveling and spent many summers camping with family while driving across Canada and the US. After retirement they traveled more extensively and Mom fulfilled a life-long dream when she reunited with several long lost relatives in Scotland.
Over her lifetime Mom faced several serious health issues. She was a truly amazing woman who took these challenges in stride. Mom had the attitude: "let's deal with it and move on". As a result she taught us all the meaning of positivity, faith, strength and resilience.
Mom was predeceased by her loving husband Allan, three older brothers, John, James and Harry, as well as her eldest son, Robert. She will be dearly missed by her younger brother Charles (Louise) and her children: Warren (Suzi), Maury (Liz), Sharon, Janice, Debbie (Darren), Kevin (Kim), and Theresa.
Mom will be lovingly remembered by her grandchildren: Christopher (Amanda), Jennifer (Kelly), Matthew (MyVahna), Connor (Ashley), Kyle (Carlie), Megan (Matt), Bailey, Hannah and Quinn, as well as 7 great-grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews across Canada and in Scotland.
We would like to thank Fraser Health Home Support Services and Caring Shepherd Home Care Services for the kind and compassionate support they provided for Mom.
