Verne Colin Cameron
On September 11, 2017 Verne Colin Cameron left this earth for his next great adventure!
Life was meant for great friends & great adventures
Verne will always be remembered for his blazing blue eyes, a smile as bright as a Hawaiian sun and his gentle nature. Most would describe Verne as a gentleman. Not one to criticize or make waves,
Verne could often be heard saying, "why can't everyone just get along?" His ability to stay neutral and see both sides of any disagreement made him a natural as a union negotiator and a steadfast friend.
Verne loved the sunshine and swimming so frequent trips to Hawaii with his partner Dixie Crossman were highlights of the year. When not in the tropics Verne found joy in music and created many friendships in the White Rock Karaoke community and the Elks Club. When happy, Verne could often be heard whistling and jingling the ever present change in his pocket.
Born in Regina, SK, Verne moved and grew up in Edmonton and as a teenager he entered Air Cadets where he discovered two of his great loves - airplanes and getting paid to travel! In 1955 Verne began work as a mechanic with Pacific Western Airlines a job he passionately loved until his retirement at age 55. From mechanic to flight engineer to crew chief, Verne was actively involved in the Union.
Once retired, Verne was a founding director of the sponsoring committee of the 907 Black Knights Air Cadets. The 'Verne Cameron Above and Beyond Award' was donated by the 907 Sponsoring Committee in recognition of Verne, "a truly amazing gentleman who was always working behind the scenes for the Cadets of 907." This is awarded annually to a cadet who has also gone above and beyond to help the 907 squadron.
In his retirement, Verne also discovered his love of Karaoke that he would later share with his brothers Gordon and Kerry and his partner Dixie.
Verne spent the final months of his life at Peach Arch Hospice enjoying frequent visitors - family and friends - often entertaining them on the little outdoor deck soaking in the sunshine and all the love! After spending a restless day looking for his passport,
Verne must have found the elusive document as he passed peacefully away that evening with his beloved Dixie by his side.
Verne is survived by his beloved partner Dixie Crossman, his four children; Karen (Gary) Booy, Kathy Cameron (John Griffith), Krista (Harold) Thibaudier and Keith (Kammy) Cameron. Grandchildren; Jesse Wierzbowski, Melissa, Ryan and Jenny Thibaudier, Riley and Reese Cameron.
Verne is also survived by his one brother Gordon and the mother of his four children Ruth Cameron, and many nieces and nephews. Verne was predeceased by his parents and his brother Kerry and sister Gail.
A Celebration of Life will be held on Saturday, September 30th at 1:00pm at Victory Memorial Park, 14831 28th Avenue Surrey.
In lieu of flowers donations would be gratefully accepted and may be made to the '907 Squadron Sponsoring Committee' or the '907 SSC' (Unit 71504 - 1463 Johnston Rd., White Rock BC V4B 5J5).
