LETTERS: A 30 km/h limit on all White Rock side streets would be appropriate

Even in the land of the Autobahn, urban speed limits are strictly enforced

I wish to confirm S. Mckeever‘s observation regarding speeding on 16 Avenue. Enforcement of speed limits is necessary.

Since Johnston Road has the 30 km/h limit (which is followed to some extent) from 16th to Five Corners, Foster Street is the new speedway from Thrift to Buena Vista.

I strongly support a 30 km/h on all side streets in White Rock. As a previous writer said, there will always be accidents because drivers (or pedestrians) get distracted for a short moment. But the consequences of being hit between 30 km/h or 50 km/h result in very different outcomes.

Even in Germany, known for fast cars and Autobahn’s reputation, speed limits in city limits are strictly enforced: 50 km/h on main thoroughfare and 30 km/h on side streets in all residential areas. Even just 3-5 km/h above speed limits get very costly.

It would take the will of all of us to adjust to the change: save lives or severe injuries, reduce pollution and save some gas money.

I sincerely ask our local government to implement such an important change for our city and be prepared to enforce it. I am sure other communities will follow.
