LETTERS: Anyone concerned about food security should consider signing Heppell Farm petition

We’ve created ‘perfect storm’ for loss of arable land

Editor:

Frank Bucholtz’ column in the Peace Arch News of June 30 clearly reminds us of the food security concerns we are facing as a planet. Flood, fire, disease and wars have created a perfect storm for the loss of arable land in many parts of the world.

The overuse of fertilizers and pesticides are rendering good farm land less productive and harmful to health.

How, then, is it possible to allow a productive and well-cared farming business to be terminated for development of commercial property?

We already stagger under the increasing costs of food.

I urge all citizens to heed Mr. Bucholtz’ call to petition local MPs and MLAs for their support in retaining the Heppell Farm in Surrey as one source of good food for mostly local consumption, as well staying alert for similar loss of Agricultural Land Reserve properties in British Columbia.
