The above pictures do not look at all like either my young grandson Felix, nor do they look like the two young daughters of Jen, who lives in the neighbourhood.

But now, as a new school year is about to begin, I want to ask all drivers to please slow down and be aware of these young children, and all of those “real” little faces, as they make their daily treks, many for the first time, back and forth to school.

They may not be “dummies” but they are our “children.” Living, breathing young versions of ourselves. And, as hard as we may attempt to tell them to watch and teach them to be careful or to look both way, they are still children. As such, many of these parental “lessons” and warnings may somehow be forgotten when a friend, who hasn’t been seen all summer, has been spotted just across the street, or when a puppy or kitten suddenly runs out in front of them.

So, slow down, keep your eyes open, stop at those stop signs, and watch out for among other things Jen’s two girls, who are just learning to ride their bikes.

I deliver this very newspaper every Wednesday and Friday morning in Jen’s quiet little neighbourhood, and I notice these dangers, along with Jen and other parents who live here with their young families. They are there right around every innocent corner or, perhaps, running out from that treed yard just in front of you.

So, please, don’t be a “dummy.” Just ease your foot off the gas and keep your eyes open for, among other things, a couple of little girls, perhaps on wobbly bicycles, or perhaps a small little fella heading to school for the first time. That and whatever other danger that may be unexpectedly lurking just around that very next corner.

As yet another school year approaches, I want to ask you to just slow down and keep your eyes open, and make sure Jen’s and everyone else’s kids get to their school and back home safely
