Dodgeball provincials to be played at Surrey school this month

Winners at single-day event will get to rep B.C. at nationals in PEI

Surrey, it’s time to dodge, duck, dip, dive and dodge.

The provincial dodgeball championships are coming to town, for one day at Elgin Park Secondary in South Surrey.

The day-long event, set for Saturday, Jan. 26, will see winners chosen to represent B.C. at the national dodgeball championships, to be held in Prince Edward Island this spring.

Individuals and teams can still register at dodgebc.com/merch, for a fee of $42 per person. Spectators are welcome to watch the action, which will happen from 10:30 a.m. to 5 p.m.

“Historically, the WDBF community (World Dodgeball Federation, which uses seven-inch foam dodgeballs) has thrived primarily on Vancouver Island,” Megan McCaffery, director of communications for Dodgeball BC, said in a release. “We’re very excited to be hosting provincials on the mainland this year, to see what the athletes here have to offer.”

Last year was B.C.’s first to send a full team to compete at the national level, McCaffery explained.

“The men’s team had an impressive showing, making the playoffs in their first year. The women’s team finished just shy of a playoff position, (and) this was also their first year of competition.”

This year, Dodgeball BC has been invited to send two men’s teams and one women’s team to represent the province at nationals in PEI. These teams will be selected based on the provincial standings, as well as input from a selection committee. Individuals and teams from across B.C. are welcome to register for provincials until Jan. 20.

“Each year, the level of talent and enthusiasm showcased at our provincial tryouts increases,” stated Ian Kopp, president of Dodgeball BC. “We are excited to watch out athletes continue to grow and improve this year.”
