Marriott senior girls fifth at UBC Classic volleyball tournament

The South Surrey side ranked No. 2 among B.C. quad-A teams heading into the 48-team tournament

The Earl Marriott Mariners senior girls volleyball team snagged a top-five finish at last weekend’s UBC Mizuno Volleyball Classic.

The South Surrey side – which was ranked No. 2 among B.C. quad-A teams heading into the 48-team tournament – saw its run ended Saturday with a quarter-final loss (25-22, 25-18) to Neelin High School, from Brandon, Man.

Neelin went on to win the gold medal over Victoria’s Lambrick Park.

As evidenced by their top-three ranking prior to the UBC event – they’ll likely drop a spot or two this week  – the Marriott squad is among the province’s best, along with other contenders from Kelowna, South Kamloops and Elgin Park, among others.

EMS is 1-0 in league play, with a win over North Surrey last week.

The Mariners took on Abbotsford’s Yale Lions Monday night after Peace Arch News’ press deadline.
