Three years after their decade-long run as B.C.’s best women’s soccer team ended, Surrey United is a game away from its 12th provincial championship in 14 years.
United defeated Coquitlam Metro Ford 3-1 in overtime last Sunday at Cloverdale Athletic Park in a Provincial Cup semifinal match, and have advanced to the final tomorrow (Saturday) in Burnaby against the North Shore Renegades.
Surrey won 11 consecutive Provincial Cup championships between 2004 and 2014, before the Renegades ended the run by winning the 2015 B.C. championship.
Against Coquitlam, Surrey needed just 23 minutes to take a 1-0 lead on a goal by Nicole Stewart, and held the advantage until Metro Ford tied the game with 19 minutes remaining.
United dominated the half-hour of extra time, getting the winning goal from Carolyn Nellis in the first overtime, and an insurance marker from Arianne Adams in the second.
United finished first in the Metro Women’s Soccer League’s Premier Division this past season with a 13-0-1 (win-draw-loss) record, three points up on the second-place North Shore squad, which was 12-0-3.
Surrey and the Renegades went head-to-head just once in Premier Division play, with United winning 3-2 in October.
