South Surrey White Rock Minor Softball Association (SSWRMSA) teams had a fantastic weekend playing softball.

Four teams represented the SSWRMSA at the U11 District Championships, held at Cloverdale Athletic Park May 27 and 28, and all four teams took home medals, according to association president Thomas Bell.

“We have seen the incredible progress our players have made by attending our player development clinics,” Bell said Monday.

“To our players: We are extremely proud of your dedication and desire to improve your skills! During this districts tournament, we witnessed firsthand all of this coming together, with every one of our players going home with a medal,” he added.

“Further, we saw great team dynamics, kids having fun and very proud coaches. We are on a great trajectory!”

The championships brought together teams from Cloverdale Minor Softball, Fleetwood Fastpitch, Surrey Storm Fastpitch and South Surrey Minor Softball.

He congratulated all the SSWRMSA teams who participated and medaled:

  • The Wood Chips won a silver medal in the Gold bracket
  • The Lime Drivers clinched a bronze medal in the Gold bracket
  • The Blueberry Muffins won the gold medal in the Silver bracket
  • The Black Bears took home silver medals in the Silver Bracket

Up next are this year’s Regional Championship (known as Softball BC U11 Celebration of Softball), which will be held June 23 to 25 in Port Coquitlam, Bell said.

“This year is a unique opportunity for our teams to participate in a multi-district regional. Normally, due to the size of our District 7 (Surrey and White Rock) we do not attend multi district regionals,” he said.

“This year our District 7 teams have been invited to participate because the host (Port Coquitlam Minor Softball) has the ability to accommodate more teams. We are hoping to be able to send all six of our U11 Community teams.”

The Regional will bring together teams from these major centres:

  • (District 6) Burnaby, New Westminster, Coquitlam, Port Coquitlam and Port Moody
  • (District) 7 Surrey including White Rock, Fleetwood, Cloverdale, Guildford, Newton and Whalley
  • (District 14) Maple Ridge, Pitt Meadows, Whonnock, Mission and Deroche

“We are very proud and impressed with our U11 players and coaches,” Bell said.

“They have worked hard to prepare for districts and had a lot of fun along the way. The district results show that we are heading in the right direction and fielding very competitive teams. We cannot wait to see our teams at the Softball BC Celebration of Softball Regional Championships.”

Bell also noted Funfest 2023 happens this weekend, June 3 and 4, at Sunnyside Park, a Play Day the association hosts at the end of each season for its Learn to Play, U7 and U9 players that will feature softball games, a picnic lunch and a lot of fun activities for players including a bouncy castle, face painting and more.
