It was a winning weekend for the White Rock Wave swim team, who travelled to Saanich on Vancouver Island for a masters swim meet.
Just 12 swimmers from the Peninsula were able to make the trek to the island, but still, several came close to setting B.C. records.
The Wave’s oldest teammate, Betty Brussel (98, turning 99 this year) broke two Canadian long course records and three provincial long course records in the Women’s 95-99 age group:
The 50M LC (Long Course) free for B.C. and Canada
• was 1:55.57 (B.C. record)
• was 1:20.31 (Canadian record)
• 1:14.51 – Brussel’s Victoria meet time

The 50M LC back for B.C. and Canada
• was 1:57.79 (B.C. record)
• was 1:24.78 (Canadian record)
• 1:20.42 Brussel’s Victoria meet time
The 50M LC breast for B.C.
• no previous B.C. record – Brussel set the B.C. record (she did not beat the current Canadian record in the category)
• 1:55.60 Brussel’s Victoria meet time
“I just hope that I can make it to next year and set all the records in the 100-104 age group!” Brussel quipped.
“I have a lot of medals, but that would be really fun!”
There are few long course masters meets in British Columbia, so there aren’t very many opportunities for swimmers to set long course records.
The annual Victoria Masters Meet had not been held since 2020, due to COVID-19 and last year, it was cancelled last-minute due to staffing issues.
“Several of our swimmers came close to breaking records and look forward to training even harder for the upcoming meets,” said White Rock Wave head coach Craig Slater.

The team enjoyed a fantastic social afterward with great food – always one of the highlights of the Victoria meet, said club president Linda Stanley Wilson.
