Vancouver has joined a handful of other B.C. cities paying its employees almost double the provincial minimum wage.
Mayor Gregor Robertson announced Thursday that the city, park board and Vancouver Police Department are now certified by the Living Wage for Families Campaign (LWFC), and staff are being compensated at $20.62 an hour.
Each year, the LWFC – a Vancouver-based organization – calculates the regional cost of living for two working adults to meet the basic needs of a family of four such as rent, food, transportation and childcare.
“Vancouver’s economy is booming, yet too many hard working families are left behind because of Vancouver’s affordability challenges,” Robertson said.

Other cities paying employees a regionally-based living wage include New Westminster, Port Coquitlam and Quesnel.
