More than 33 teams and their friends and family braved the rain at Centennial Park for the White Rock/South Surrey Relay For Life last month.
Over 12 damp hours, June 22, the 243 participants in the ninth annual Canadian Cancer Society White Rock/South Surrey Relay For Life raised more than $72,000.
The event began with a victory lap by cancer survivors who received a yellow t-shirt for taking the opening lap of the event.
"We are all touched by cancer in some way, whether we face it ourselves or support our loved ones, neighbours, families and friends in their fights," said a thank-you statement released after the overnight event by the volunteer organizing committee.
"At (the relay) we celebrate the lives of those of us who are fighting disease now, we remember and honour those we have lost, and by fundraising and coming together to support each other, we fight back."
White Rock Mayor Wayne Baldwin, in his report to council last week, commended the efforts of both the cancer society and city staff, who entered a team in the relay. He noted the fundraising goal had been set at $43,000.
"Well done, staff, and well done to the cancer society," Baldwin said.
Funds raised through Relay For Life are invested in cancer research, cancer prevention initiatives and support for people living with cancer.
That includes funding over 40 research projects and almost 40 clinical trials as well as patient support programs such as the Cancer Information Services line (1-888-939-3333) and Camp Goodtimes.
